Backflow Prevention

Brooklyn Backflow Prevention: Prevent Plumbing Backflow to Avoid Contamination

Downtown Plumbing provides certified backflow testing, repair and certification to the greater Brooklyn area.  Backflow prevention stops the water in your system from flowing back into the public water supply. Backflow prevention systems are vital to keeping water safe, so public health services constantly check to make sure every residential and commercial plumbing system operates properly. Downtown Plumbing’s prompt service and experience ensures that you meet backflow certification requirements and backflow codes set by municipalities.

What is Backflow?

Backflow is the unwanted reversal in the flow of water from a real or possible source of contamination or pollution back to the clean public water supply. There are two types of backflow:

  • Backpressure occurs when the user system is at a higher pressure than the supply water systems, allowing undesirable substances to be pushed back into the potable water system.
  • Backsiphonage occurs when negative or reduced pressure exists in the supply piping, allowing undesirable substances to be drawn into the potable water supply.

How Can You Avoid Backflow?

A number of simple devices ensure that water can only pass through a pipeline the correct direction. A reduced pressure backflow preventer protects water supplies from contamination by controlling the water pressure in the plumbing system and maintaining water flow in the correct direction. A non-return valve, when properly fitted, ensures that water flows through a pipe in the correct direction even when pressure conditions may otherwise cause reversed flow.

Why Test Backflow Preventers?

Mechanical backflow preventers, just like many plumbing systems, have internal seals, springs and many moving parts. Naturally, these tools are prone to fouling, wear and breakage.  Not only are backflow preventer systems subject to damage, but they can also be bypassed, so it is necessary to insure they are functioning properly. All mechanical backflow preventers have to be tested with specialized, properly calibrated equipment.  Downtown Plumbing has all the required the backflow testing equipment and backflow prevention expertise to handle any backflow issue you may face.
